I am having a totally new experience today: we are stopping in more or less random places to look around, and are not in any hurry to leave. Usually on our car trips I would have either a certain number of kilometers to cover, or another deadline to beat. This time though, there’s a car, there’s a place to explore and there’s a home where the doors are open until late and nobody is offended if we are late. How great is this?
Garachico is a small ancient town that was once totaled by an eruption which changed the landscape and created the “natural baths” – as lava cooled upon reaching the sea, it formed barriers and ridges along the coastline, which now create a magnificent spectacle of water crushing against the rocks even in relatively calm weather. They also form natural “swimming pools”, protected from the sea and connected by footpaths to each other and to the embankment. Slow older people like myself run a risk of being soaked by a bigger wave, which I of course can tell from experience.
Sightseeing is not easy, so refuelling happens at a place which nicely lives up to its Tripadvisor rating where I tried an abstractly-looking dish made of gofio – not bad and very-very local.
